Clearing his throat, Dylan asked in a low, steady voice, “Who?”
“Miss Wheeler and her mother.”
The light in his eyes flickered out like a candle suddenly snuffed. “I’m not seeing them.”
After a long night of waiting, the one he hoped would come still hadn’t shown. Dylan moved to the floor–to–ceiling window facing the front gates and lit a cigarette. As he exhaled a cloud of smoke, a bitter smile crossed his face. “What am I even doing?”
Suzy had intended to sneak over that night to check on Grace, who was weighing heavily on her mind. But then something happened to Claude.
She had only stepped away to the restroom in the clothing store, and by the time she returned, he’d been stabbed. Although the wound hadn’t hit any vital organs, it was still serious the blade had been laced with poison
With no time to waste neutralizing the toxin, Suzy sent Allen in her place to visit Grace, disguised as the Wright family doctor.
Luckily, Allen’s medical skills were more than up to the task.

Dylan’s urgency had led her to assume Grace’s condition was severe. Even as she tended to Claude, her mind had kept drifting to her.
Allen raised a brow. “I know my skills don’t match yours, but you don’t have to doubt me.”
Suzy brushed it off. “Then I guess she’s alright now.”
Given the distance between the south and north ends of the city and the unpredictable health of Grace, her condition could have stabilized by the time Allen arrived.
Either way, knowing Grace was safe brought her relief. “Thanks.”
Allen rolled his eyes, gesturing toward the closed bedroom door. “How’s Claude?”
Suzy pinched the bridge of her nose. “Poison’s cleared, but he’s still unconscious.”
Though the antidote had worked, he hadn’t regained consciousness, and it had been several hours.
Allen frowned. “That’s odd.”

“Maybe he’s just exhausted,” Suzy said. “He’s been pushing himself non–stop lately, working like a man possessed, especially snealding in extra hours at night.”
He thought she didn’t know, but his worn–out expression had already given him away.
Suzy understood that it wasn’t about proving bearing too much of his burden.

Having said that, she felt reassured that Claude wasn’t in critical condition. “What about the attacker? Any leads?”
“Do we need to investigate?” Suzy sneered. “There’s only one person in this world who wants Claude dead.”
“Julian?” Allen seemed doubtful. “Isn’t he still locked up?”
“Being locked up doesn’t mean he’s powerless. Besides, he has his devoted wife.”
“Alright, but seriously, for him to be such a scumbag, and she still won’t leave him? I’ve seen people blinded by love, but this is on another level. Makes your feelings for Dylan back then look reasonable.”
Suzy kicked him playfully. “Get lost!”
Allen laughed, backing away. “Just joking! Alright, I’ll start with his wife and see what I can dig up.”
“Good,”
Once Allen left, Suzy quietly slipped into Claude’s room. She stood by the bed, watching him, eyes still closed in recovery.
“Claude, don’t worry. What happened today won’t happen again. You’re the only brother I have left in this world, and I won’t let anyone else get a chance to hurt you.”
