Chapter 8
Antonio and my dad had always been close, and they loved playing chess together. In the past, they always sat for hours, chatting while playing chess as if they’d never run out of topics.
Hearing Dad mention Antonio now, I had mixed feelings.
I couldn’t come back frequently to be with my parents, so I cherished every visit and chatted with them for a long time.
Mom asked about my work, while Dad cared about my life. Though neither of them mentioned Antonio directly, I could tell they were worried.
After all, Antonio and I used to be so in love. If it were in the past, he would have come back at once if anything happened.
Now that he was nowhere to be seen, of course, they were
worried.
But soon, my words diverted their attention.
The kid in the next bed kept crying and screaming, and the adults‘ scolding seemed endless.
Somehow, I felt irritated. Something invisible pressed down on my heart, making it hard for me to even breathe
As I was having a headache, Antonio pushed open the door to the ward and strode inside.
His hair was a bit messy. Clearly, he rushed over here. His eyes

scanned the room and finally landed on me with something complex in them.
“What are you doing here?” I stood up and said, my tone cold.
“I heard your dad is hospitalized. I came to check on him.”
His voice was a bit deep. Then he turned to my dad and forced a smile. “How are you feeling?”
Dad nodded and smiled, clearly a lot more relieved. “Much better. I’m glad you’re here, Antonio.”
Dad and Mom were truly relieved when they saw Antonio.
His arrival lightened the atmosphere in the ward, and the smile on Dad’s face grew bigger.
Just as Antonio was about to say something, the kid in the next bed started to cry again. The shriek echoed in the ward, making me even more irritated.
Antonio frowned, seemingly upset by the noise as well.
“Just a second, Grace. I’ll go make some arrangements.”
With that, he left hurriedly without waiting for my response.
I only reacted when someone from the hospital came to transfer my dad.
Only then did I know Antonio had arranged for mv dad to stay in the VIP room.
I owed him a favor just like that. For a time, I felt complicated.
The VIP room was much better than the standard ward. It was

spacious, bright, and fully equipped. Most importantly, it was a private room, and we didn’t have to endure any noise
anymore.
As Dad lay on the clean bed, he obviously looked much more relaxed. Then Mom patted my hand gently and smiled.
“Grace, can you stop being mad at me?” shortly after we sat down in the VIP room, Antonio suddenly asked.
He said this tentatively and didn’t dare to meet my gaze. It seemed he was testing out my reaction.
Dad and Mom were stunned when they heard this.
Mom thought of the things I said and assumed Antonio and I had a row. She grabbed my hand and advised gently, “All couples quarrel and patch things up in the end. Why don’t you talk things out? Don’t throw a tantrum.”
I felt a pang of bitterness and wanted to tell them so much about Antonio’s infidelity, but at the sight of Dad’s pale face and Mom’s worried look, I didn’t think now was the right time..
Dad was still hospitalized, and the last thing I wanted was for this to make his condition worse.
“Antonio, let’s talk outside,” I said in an indifferent tone as I stood up and walked out.
He was stunned for a second before following me out.
