However, he did not dare to say that out loud.
All he did was look at the door and shout, “Leave the door open so Mr. Rivers can come and go as he pleases, got that? Also, get some curtains to cover that iron door. We’ll replace the
door soon.
“Say, is it me, or is that lightbulb dim? Isn’t it time we upgraded the bathroom? I’ll have a hot water system and a bathtub installed tomorrow!”
Liam muttered to himself, loud enough for everyone to hear, as if he was venting his frustrations to someone else. He genuinely felt sorry for Ethan. After everything Ethan had sacrificed, that should not be his fate.
Meanwhile, the inmates in the other cells were bewildered, not knowing what was going on. They all pressed their faces against the bars, trying to look outside. Just who could be so important for Liam to make such a big fuss?
After ensuring Ethan was settled, Liam left, not wanting to disturb the man further. Once outside, he called the lieutenant governor, Zane, and asked about the situation.
Zane told him that George showed no remorse and still wanted to align with the Quinns to have Stephen take over. Upon hearing that, Liam’s face turned red with anger.
As soon as he hung up the phone, he immediately started cussing. “Is he out of his mind? The Quinns aren’t worth shit compared to Mr. Rivers! No matter how powerful the Quinns are, can they turn a collapsing province into the nation’s top province?”
Liam’s chest heaved. As he recalled the events at the border earlier, his anger quickly turned into despair. He was furious by the sheer stupidity of George’s and the Quinns‘ decision but felt despaired because Ethan would no longer manage Riveria.
“Riveria is doomed. Our future looks bleak.”
That night, Liam could not sleep and chain–smoked one cigarette after cigarette.
The next day, Stephen emerged from Rachel’s bedroom. When he went downstairs, he saw George already waiting in the living room.
Breakfast was spread on the table in front of George–toast and coffee, prepared by the housekeeper.
“Morning.” George smiled. “Come and have breakfast.”
Stephen walked over and took a sip of coffee.
“Pfft!”
He immediately spat it out.

“What’s wrong?” George was startled.
Nothing. It’s just too hot and doesn’t suit my taste.”
Stephen set the coffee aside and picked up a slice of toast. He took a bite and instantly frowned, finding the taste off–putting.
He was used to gourmet nreals in Metropolis and had never eaten food like that. He hated it.
George said, “Take your time eating. I have something to discuss with you. Since Ethan was in charge before, many mayors and officials have connections with him. Some might even have taken his bribes.”
